The first observance of Father's Day is believed to have been held on June 19, 1910 through the efforts of Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington. After hearing a sermon about the newly established Mother's Day, she felt a day needed to be set aside to honor fathers as well. The adoption of Father's Day as a official holiday was a long process. Although the idea was first introduced during Woodrow Wilson's presidency, it wasn't until 1966 that President Lyndon Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. Six years later, the day was made a permanent national holiday when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972.

Although understood to incorporate all fathers, the most common spelling is singular, Father's Day. That is how it was spelled when the bill was first introduced to Congress in 1913, probably to mirror the singular spelling of Mother's Day. Father's Day is a moveable holiday, meaning it is not fixed in relation to the calendar. It is celebrated on the third Sunday of June in 55 of the world's countries (including the USA, Canada and the UK) and on other days elsewhere.
