Breathtaking 2011 Porcelain Editions By Hildegard Günzel

For her 2011 wax-over-porcelain collection, Hildegard Günzel sculpted with a focus on the theme Dolls - A Special Kind of Art. Describing sculpting as "painting in the third dimension," Hildegard states that doll making is the artistic form of expression that best suits her: "Portraying human feelings and imparting my sense of aesthetics to others. To me, dolls are standing between man and the immovable sculpture that is made for eternity." Just as Hildegard herself is a true artist, she also describes each of her new dolls as a master of artistry. While their clothing may be from a bygone era, each doll could just as likely be a contemporary figure in costume. Surprising herself with colorful costume choices, Hildegard successfully brings together form and color, uniting fantasy and reality in each edition of her breathtaking new 2011 collection.

Annette Says Farewell With One Last Collection

I'm especially happy to have been able to give this collection to The Toy Shoppe as an exclusive. Over the years we've had such a great working relationship that also turned into a treasured friendship - I couldn't think of anyone better than Barrie and Danny Shapiro to present these dolls.      - Annette Himstedt

Between Annette's September 2008 announcement and the final closing of her manufactory in April, so many details had to be taken care of that she had not dared think it possible to finish the five dolls she had begun. In the last weeks, her old determination pushed her into overdrive. Every single doll was hand-finished by Annette herself! For one final edition, doll lovers can delight in the spectacular artistry of Annette Himstedt with her Farewell Collection.

These five dolls are very special to me. Not just because they're the last manufactured dolls I'll ever produce, but also because they are truly wonderful dolls. Ole, the cheeky Scandinavian boy; Mei Mei and Ping Mei, the twins; and Kateri and Antha, who are so very beautiful. I can't really put it into words, but these dolls 'talk' to me in a very special way.      ~Annette Himstedt

Annette Himstedt Closes Her Doll Manufactory In Germany

Annette Himstedt, the most influential doll artist of the modern era, closed her doll manufactory in the spring of 2009, ceasing production of her manufactured dolls. Citing economic issues in a letter to her collectors, she reflected on her experience, "I have experienced many highs as well as a few lows during this time but the pleasure I have been able to bring to collectors worldwide has always been the central driving force for me." Annette spent her years as an artist challenging herself to do better, more wonderful dolls each year and the results are phenomenal. "I think that the last collections will become as popular as my first collection in 1986 was at the time. I am sure that they will increase in value."
